Pest Free Summerhill

This group of volunteers is working to install and maintain trap lines in green belts and walkways in the Fitzherbert area of Palmerston North, to reduce pest numbers and thus enhance the biodiversity of these urban bush areas.

The Department of Conservation tells us that native bird species depend on native trees for their food supply. Possums and rats eat seeds and seedlings, impact on forest regeneration, compete with native wildlife for food and directly prey on birds, eggs and insects. Controlling these animals improves the biodiversity, scenic and recreational values of the bush.

A trap circuit has been installed along the Turitea Walkway (part of Te Araroa Trail ), behind La Lena Grove (Barber's Bush), Springdale Grove, Heathcote Place (Springdale Park) and the bush backing onto Massey University. Pest catch rates are steady.

The group who maintain and clear the traps is small - new local volunteers are very welcome, to extend the range of this pest control project.

With thanks to Palmerston North City Council, who provided 30 Doc200 and 20 Timms traps to this project, and Aokautere New World, who offered eggs and apples for bait.
